Dino Dossier: Gigantopithecus – Bigfoot / Sasquatch

A new announcement of a well known mammal - Gigantopithecus - translated: Big Ape. Hopefully he's not as violent as the other ape like animals in the game, who run around, build bases and kill each other. 😉

Common Name: Gigantopithecus
Species: Gigantopithecus fibrarator
Time: Pleistocene
Diet: Herbivore
Temperament: Territorial
Domestication
Tameable: Yes
Rideable: Yes
Command: admincheat summon BigFoot_Character_BP_C
  • Wild: Gigantopithecus fibrarator is a strange creature. It is usually quite passive, but it has a very short temper when it comes to its personal space. Once another creature gets close, this gentle giant quickly becomes a rampaging beast. Best to give them a wide berth.
  • Domesticated: In addition to being at home picking berries a tamed Gigantopithecus can be taught to harvest the fibers found on many island plants as well. It appears to be entirely content to pick at plants all day, eat the berries, and hold the fibers for its tribe. Playful once tamed, Gigantopithecus seems to enjoy throwing its shoulder-mounted rider into the air. It probably feels this is a game, but clever brigands can use this "game" to vault over walls and small cliffs.
  • Known Information: Gigantopithecus seems most happy to lazily lay about, picking berries from plants. Many Gigantopithecus spend much of their day in one small area unless they are provoked.

Adding Server Admins

Since Patch 179.0 it’s posible to name administrators for your ARK: Survival Evolved Server. Those people are able to use administrative commands (e.g. the Cheat-Commands) without having to enter the server-password first. This short tutorial will show you how it works.

Create the file \ShooterGame\Saved\AllowedCheaterSteamIDs.txt (or open the file if it already exists). Each line of the file represents one player who is recognized as admin. So, if your file was to contain this text:

76561197995589012
76561197995589013

It would mean that the Users with the SteamID’s 76561197995589012 and 76561197995589013 are admins.

If you’re unsure what the SteamID of the person you’re trying to add is, simply use cheat ListPlayers to display a list of all online players and their SteamID’s. Better still, consult our guide on how to retrieve SteamID’s online to save you from having to ask everyone to come online.

To revoke their admin-privileges simply remove their name from the file and restart your server.

It’s as easy as that! If you’ve got any questions, please let us know in the comments.

These are the changes of ARK: Survival Evolved’s Patch 180.0, grouped into categories for clarity. If not otherwise indicated, they’re quoted from the relevant Steam Thread.

Official Servers

  • Four new “PvE Hardcore” servers for North America, Europe, and Oceania — each.

New Items / New Structures

  • Added the unique Phiomia and Carnotaurus saddles
  • Major map update: new resources (including summit and underwater Crystals), better visuals, better optimization, and WIP areas completed

  • Wild AI Targeting Range on Megalodons is reduced by 50%
  • Flyers now take approximately 6x damage from bullets and ranged projectiles.

Game Changes

  • Fixed a missing value in thatch & wood structure settings, now effectively thatch and wood about 2.5x as resistant to damage as they were before.
  • Can’t build signs near enemy foundations anymore, was used to grief people by wedging them into their homes etc
  • Structures in PvE now have per-structure PvE allowed-demolish time, by default: 4 days for thatch/small utility structures, 8 days days for wood, 12 days for stone, and 16 days for metal
  • PvE now shows a “Anyone Can Demolish” timer on structures
  • Can no longer… place sleeping bags/structures thru other player’s/team’s structures
  • Spear-killing a fish will now also instantly grab the fish so that you can stay out of the water
  • Stone wall properly colorizable

UI Changes

  • New Server gameplay options exposed to the Host Game UI

Bugfixes

  • Particle FX on activated structures now appear correctly after reloading in singleplayer

  • Explosions no longer damage structures thru walls/obstructions

  • Can no longer place doors of multiple tiers over each other.
  • Fixed exploit with getting flyers underneath the World. If you do this, they will die. Also you can’t pull-grab targets through the World either.
  • Fixed issue where foliage would sometimes respawn on your base or on your dinos
  • Can no longer damage players through walls with pikes/grenades etc
  • Can no longer strafe while prone
  • Can no longer pull characters through ground with flyers
  • Flyers no longer get into a bad flying state when saved while flying (work-around before v180: whistle for them to follow you , then whistle for them to stop after they start flying)
  • Can no longer place structures if line of sight is broken by enemy structure
  • Crop plot saving issue fixed

Performance

  • Massive async level load/unload hitching reductions
  • Approximate 15-20% server and client CPU perf gain!!!! combination of link time code generation and opcode optimizations
  • Massive Server Perf Improvement / PhysX Bug fix: no more super-slow servers
  • 3GB+ RAM reduction for servers, ~1GB RAM+ reduction for clients. For serves over 50% memory savings!!!!!!!! Basically we’ve converted all our foliage structures to use data primitive types rather than “Objects” 🙂
  • Client side GPU perf improvements: foliage batching rewrite

5 Handy Tips for Beginners

There are a couple of aspects to ARK that are probably quite unsurprising for people experienced at playing survival games, but are incredibly handy for those new to the genre. The following five tips should come in handy for everyone who isn’t taking advantage of them already.

Your pickup-key has a 360° radius

Contrary to what many people believe, and what would be intuitive, you don’t actually have to look at something to pick it up. The ‘E’-key works as a general pick-up that will simply collect everything in a certain radius around you. What makes this realization particularly useful is that it means you can spam the E-key and walk around while picking up many items.

You can use the Q-key to quickly arm and disarm

This is another handy keyboard tip: You’ll often find yourself in a situation where you quickly want to pick something up, but can’t afford to let go of your weapon for long. The ‘Q’-key solves this dilemma. If you’ve got a weapon in your hand it’ll equip the next tool, and if you’ve got a tool in your hand it’ll equip the weapon.

Stopping movement will regenerate Energy at an impressive rate

It makes sense that a short respite will allow you to replenish your energy. Interestingly enough, this effect is even more pronounced in ARK than in Real-Life. If you’re hunted by a visibly enraged dinosaur and have gained a little on him, you should consider stopping for a second or two to bring your energy back to useful levels. It is however advisable to get a feeling for this trick before using it in a dangerous situation.

Slingshots are an excellent early game investment

Especially during the early levels melee combat is something you want to avoid. You’re not strong yet, and pretty much everything is bigger than you are (lest you encounter a scorpion which will unfortunately not end well either). The slingshot is the first real ranged weapon available to the beginner. However, that’s only one of its attractive qualities. It also generates torpor, allowing you to use it for taming, and as an additional bonus it uses stones as ammunition.

The Glowing Rays are Loot Caches

Each cache can only be accessed at a certain level, so be sure to check you’re ready before you set out.
