Dino Dossier: Brontosaurus

Common Name: Brontosaurus
Species: Brontosaurus lazarus
Time: Late Cretaceous
Diet: Herbivore
Temperament: Docile
Domestication
Tameable: Yes
Rideable: Yes, by multiple
Saddle: Bronto Saddle (Lvl. 55)
Command: admincheat summon Sauropod_Character_BP_C
  • Wild: Among the largest creatures I've seen on the island, Brontosaurus Lazarus is larger than any sauropod I've read about. In fact, the dinosaur is so massive that it ignores most other creatures.
  • Domesticated: Because of how docile it is, Brontosaurus makes the ideal pack-animal. Peaceful tribes use it to carry incredible quantities of resources, while warring tribes use it to mobilize their army. Unfortunately, its enormity means that most attempts to tame Brontosaurs can take longer than almost any other creature on the island.
  • Known Information: I've seen a pack of Raptors tear apart smaller Dinosaurs while Brontosaurus continues eating, seemingly oblivious to the hunting pack. The Brontosaurus is extremely protective of its eggs and will attack if provoked. However, some may think this is an Apatosaurus, Dreadnoughtus, Argentinosaurus, or other sauropod - but this is a strange island and I'm the one doing the research. I'm convinced that this genus is Brontosaurus and no one can tell me otherwise. My study, my rules.

Dino Dossier: Bat

Common Name: Bat
Species: Onychonycteris specuncola
Time: Eocene
Diet: Omnivore
Temperament: Aggressive
Domestication
Tameable: No
Rideable: No
Command: admincheat summon Bat_Character_BP_C
  • Wild: Onychonycteris specuncola is one of the few omnivores I've seen on the island. They seem to live primarily off the mushrooms and moss within the caves, but they attack almost any non-insect on sight.
  • Domesticated: Not large enough to be used as mounts, and not strong enough to carry much, Onychonycteris still works well as a guard animal. Whether protecting a vacant home, or members of a tribe, their relatively vicious nature has its uses.
  • Known Information: They avoid Titanoboa whenever possible which leads me to believe the snake to be a natural predator of Onychonycteris. While flying in the dark caves would be difficult for any creature, Onychonycteris ability to use echolocation has allowed it to adapt perfectly. It can be found idly flying around the caves as often as it can be found hanging from bits of the cave ceilings.

Farming Tutorial

Sometimes, if you range the woods, you’ll find some precious seeds. Most people don’t know how to use them. This tutorial will help them to understand all aspects of farming.

Why farming?

On first sight it looks like a bad idea to farm something. You need materials, time, endurance and free space in your home. So why don’t stick with searching the berries and other materials in the wild? This can be answered very easily: quality, quantity and predictability.

  • You know what you get. If you need narcoberries, you’ll get narcoberries
  • You can get rare fruits, which are required for some tonics
  • You’ll get much more berries than searching in the wild

Farming requires 5 elements:

  1. Seeds of the plant you want to grow
  2. Plot
  3. Fertilizer
  4. Water
  5. Time

The plot acts as the main “container”. You’ll have to put the seeds, fertilizer and water in the plot inventory. These will be removed in a few seconds and the plot will start growing your plants.

Seeds

seeds are randomly found while searching for berries from natural sources. More details of the resulting plants on our page: Berries and Plants

Berry Bush seeds
(may be removed)
Azulberry seeds
Amarberry seeds Tintoberry seeds
Citronal seeds Mejoberry seeds
Narcoberry seeds Stimberry seeds
Savaroot seeds Longgrass seeds
Rockarrot seeds

Plot

There are 3 different types of Plots. The larger the plot, the more can be harvested.

Small Plot Can be used for every type of berry seeds.
Can hold 200 Waterunits
Can use human and small feces
Medium Plot Can be used for berries and Savoroot, Longgrass, Rockarrot and Citronal
Can hold 400 Waterunits
Can use up to medium feces
Large Plot Can be used for everything in the game, including later introduced crops.
Can use all feces

Fertilizer

While growing, the plot will use up the fertilizer over time. You’ll have to make sure, that there is always fertilizer available while growing crops.

Human feces
+1000
Small dinosaur feces
+2500
Medium dinosaur feces
+5000
Large dinosaur feces
+10000
Fertilizer
+60000

Water

Water can be added on 3 different ways: manually, by irrigation and by rain.

  • Filling by hand requires a water container (like a waterskin). Place it in the inventory of the plot and click “Remote Item Use” to fill the water from the container into the plot. The amount of water added to the plot depends on the container used. For example: a waterskin will provide 100 units of water.
  • Filling by irrigation requires a working tap close to the plot. The tap will be marked as working, if it contains a water intake or a filled watertank. A working tap will change it color from grey to blue. If everything is working you’ll see the information “irrigated” instead of the water level in your plot.
  • Filling by rain requires…. rain. Not very reliable.

If the location of the plot is hot, more water is required, but the crops grow faster.

1600px-Crude_Farm

Time

of course a crop doesn’t pop up instantly. You’ll have to wait a lil bit. The plants will only grow if there is water and fertilizer available. If any of them is missing the growth will stagnate.

  1. Freshly seeded: 0-1 Minute
  2. Seedling: ~7 Ingame Days
  3. Midling
  4. Growthling
  5. Fruitling (ready to harvest)

Dino Dossier: Argentavis

Common Name: Argentavis
Species: Argentavis atrocollum
Time: Late Miocene
Diet: Carrion Feeder
Temperament: Aggressive
Domestication
Tameable: Yes
Rideable: Yes
Saddle: Argentavis Saddle (Lvl. 55)
Command: admincheat summon Argent_Character_BP_C
  • Wild: Lording over the skies across the island, Argentavis atrocollum has few aerial rivals. It is a small consolation for the island's other avian Creatures, then, that Argentavis seems to have little interest in anything alive. Although they are not interested in many animals, Argentavis will attack any human within sight making them an aerial threat to many humans with basic equipment.
  • Domesticated: Argentavis is actually slower than the far more common Pteranodon, but it has significantly more Stamina, and can sustain flight for approximately three times as long. This makes them the best Creatures on the island for traveling or hauling cargo over long distances.
  • Known Information: Quite apart from what I would have guessed, Argentavis does not have the stooped neck typical of modern buzzards and vultures. It is unknown if it adapted this stronger neck to deal with predators on the island, or if its lineage comes from before the stooped neck became common in carrion-eating birds. It is a highly aggressive creature, willing to chase players long distances for simply being within its vision.

Dino Dossier: Ankylosaurus

Common Name: Ankylosaurus
Species: Ankylosaurus crassacutis
Time: Late Cretaceous
Diet: Herbivore
Temperament: Docile
Domestication
Tameable: Yes
Rideable: Yes
Saddle: Ankylo Saddle (Lvl. 40)
Command: admincheat summon Ankylo_Character_BP_C

  • Wild: Unlike many of the herd animals on the island, Ankylosaurus crassacutis tends to live in small family units. I believe they can afford to stick with smaller groups because of their incredibly thick skin for which they're named.
  • Domesticated: Without a doubt, the best trait of a trained Ankylosaurus is its enormously dense tail. This tail is powerful enough to shatter the resource-laden rocks of the island. One of the wealthier human tribes on the island utilizes a squad of Ankylosaurus in its mines and quarries.
  • Known Information: Despite not being among the largest of the islands herbivores, the Ankylosaurus is one of the more difficult Creatures to take down. Its thick, armored skin seems to make it more than a match for several of the mid-sized predators that would otherwise hunt it. Reckless carnivores are just as likely to hurt themselves on Ankylosaurus' spikes as they are to get hit by its tail.

ARK: Survival Evolved Patch 174.31 – Patchnotes

changelog

These are the changes of ARK: Survival Evolved’s Patch 174.31. If not otherwise indicated, they’re quoted from the relevant Steam Thread.

  • “EnablePvPGamma=true” server option will now work 😉
  • Added move-and-copy logic to saving to avoid any corruptions of save or tribe data
  • Fixed a stat math problem with Downloading Dinos via the Obelisks

(Original Announcement on Steam)

Here are the patchnotes of the previous patch (174.3).

How to Queue / Join a full Server

ARK being as popular as it is unfortunately also has its downsides. In particular, full offical servers. While there’s something to be said for switching to unofficial servers, that’s not always an option, particularly when you already have spent some effort on your base.

Fortunately, Steam offers a built-in queueing solution for servers, saving you from the trouble of having to retry until you’re finally able to connect. And this is how it works: Begin by going to your Steam server list (In the Steam Client use View -> Servers). You should now see something like this:

Steam Server ListIf you right-click on the server you want to join in that list, the following context-menu will appear:

steam_server_windowNow click Connect to Server, which will bring you to this window:

steam_game_infoAnd this is where the magic happens. A click on Auto-Retry (highlighted in white above) will uncover this menu:

steam_retry_menuSet the radio-button to “Join the server as soon as a player slot is available” and click on “Join Game”. Steam will take care of the rest!

ARK: Survival Evolved Patch 174.3 – Patchnotes

(Click here for the patchnotes of the previous ARK: Survival Evolved patch 174.2, and here for the patchnotes of the next patch 174.31)

  • Gamma adjustment now disabled on PvP/Hardcore servers (by server-side default). Unofficial Servers can force allow gamma adjustment on PvP/Hardcore with this commandline/INI option:
    EnablePvPGamma=true
  • Replenishing times on all resources reduced by 40% (will replenish faster)

These are the changes of ARK: Survival Evolved’s Patch 174.3. If not otherwise indicated, they’re quoted from the relevant Steam Thread.
